The Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, Carlos Mesquita, announced the postponement of the selection of the contractor for the rehabilitation of National Road Number 1 (N1). This decision, motivated by additional demands from the World Bank, the main financier of the project to rehabilitate this strategic road, as reported by the newspaper Noticias, could affect the timetable initially planned for the start of the work, scheduled for October and November of this year.
During a visit to the rehabilitation works on National Road Number 2, in Maputo province, Carlos Mesquita shared this information. He explained that the government is working to resolve the outstanding requirements and launch the public tender as soon as possible, recognising that this postponement could affect the actual start of the works.
The tender, originally scheduled to last 45 days and due to start last month, is still in the process of finalising details. Consultants hired for the preliminary work have already finalised the analysis of the type of road, geometry, geophysical and geotechnical tests, among other crucial elements for launching the tender to hire the contractor.
“The rehabilitation of the N1 will include interventions in the drainage system, signalling, construction of shoulders and replacement of damaged structural elements, financed by the World Bank. After the initial phase between Inchope and Gorongosa, and Gorongosa and Caia, work is planned on the Chimuara-Nicoadala and Metoro-Namialo sections,” reads the press release.
