Government Needs Nearly Nine Billion Meticals to Rehabilitate Infrastructures Destroyed by Rain

The Minister of Public Works, Water Resources and Housing, Carlos Mesquita, revealed that almost nine billion meticais are needed to rehabilitate infrastructures that were destroyed by the rains in the last rainy season [2021/2022].

According to the minister, nature’s fury has been destroying undertakings such as roads and bridges, and to restore what was destroyed by last year’s rains, a lot of money is needed.

“What we saw last year, with the last rains, is that about 8.7 billion meticais are [needed] to recover infrastructures,” Mesquita said.

In turn, the Order of Engineers of Mozambique believes that the recovery money for the destroyed infrastructures could have been saved if the works had been done by professional engineers, revealing that the poor quality of the works has to do with what is called ‘hang-ups’ in the area.

“In many situations, we have works done by those I consider as ‘hangers-on’ in our industry. These ‘hangers-on’ do not understand some of the phenomena that happen in engineering, but we will do our best, as the Order of Engineers, to improve the situation of our country,” pointed out Feliciano Dias, President of the Order of Engineers of Mozambique.

The statements were made on Monday, August 29, at the 9th Luso-mozambican Engineering Congress, which runs until September 1, under the theme “Engineering Challenges for Development and Fight Against Climate Change”.
