In the next few days, four airports in the country will begin rehabilitation and modernisation work to meet the growing demand of the airport market. Among the infrastructures to benefit is Inhambane Airport, whose work will begin in October and will include the construction of a new passenger terminal, increasing annual capacity from 30,000 to 160,000 travellers.
According to a report in the newspaper Noticias, the information was provided on Wednesday (28) by the financial director of the company Aeroportos de Moçambique (ADM), Saíde Júnior.
‘Another airport that will undergo improvements is Beira, with work scheduled to begin in October and be completed in September 2025. With the rehabilitation, the airport’s passenger capacity will be increased from 450,000 to 700,000 a year,’ said Júnior.
The official also made it known that the modernisation programme also includes Nampula Airport, which will receive interventions to increase its passenger and cargo handling capacity.
‘Pemba Airport will have its works divided into two phases. The first, scheduled for the beginning of 2025, will be carried out through a public-private partnership and will include the expansion of the passenger terminal, the apron and the opening of a new aircraft lane,’ he said.
Júnir also explained that in the second phase of the works, the runway will be extended from 1800 to 2400 metres to accommodate larger aircraft, in response to the exploitation of natural gas projects in Cabo Delgado.
In recent years, ADM has dedicated itself to modernising airport services, with the aim of providing a more comfortable and safer environment for passengers and other users.
It should be noted that recently the company Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM) announced that it intends to acquire four new aircraft this year to respond to the problem of a lack of aeroplanes, especially evident when there is ongoing maintenance, which has caused serious operational problems and flight delays over the last few years.
