EU Provides More Than 332 Thousand Euros for the Requalification and Urbanisation of Neighbourhoods in the City of Beira

The European Union (EU) has made more than 332,000 euros (23 million meticais) available for the implementation of a project for the integrated requalification and urbanisation of the neighbourhoods that make up the municipality of the city of Beira, in Sofala province, central Mozambique.

According to Rádio Moçambique, the first phase of the programme will cover the Macuti-Miquejo neighbourhood, and the work will consist of opening new access roads, paving roads, creating recreational spaces, building two micro-basins and planting trees.

According to the media outlet, the ceremony to launch the project was held on Wednesday 19 June, and on the occasion the mayor of Beira, Albano Carige, said that the action aims to reduce the damage caused during the rainy season, giving residents more peace of mind.

“The works will last six months and we have the support of the European Union, which will work together with the municipality to resolve this situation,” he emphasised.

Recently, the European High Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen, revealed that, in recent years, the EU has invested more than 400 million euros (27.1 billion dollars) in Mozambique as part of bilateral cooperation and partnerships, adding that she encourages European companies to invest in the country and promote more jobs for young people.

Speaking after an audience with the Mozambican Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Verónica Macamo, the European official said that Mozambique has excellent relations with the EU, standing out as an important partner in all areas of activity.

“Our financial commitment to the country exceeds 400 million euros and I’m here to deepen partnerships and encourage new European companies to invest in Mozambique,” she said.
