The Mozambican Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, Carlos Mesquita, recently revealed that the African Development Bank (ADB) is investing over US$3.5 million in the construction of 17 multipurpose water supply systems in Manica and Sofala provinces.
Quoted in the publication of this Thursday (29), of the newspaper news, the governor clarified that the action, falls under the implementation of the Post Cyclone Idai Reconstruction programme, and covers the Central region of the country, which in March 2019 was affected by the tropical storm.
“The work has been ongoing since last year and the physical execution level of the contract is at 65%. The first seven water supply systems for about five thousand families, equivalent to 25 thousand people, living in the districts of Búzi, Nhamatanda and Dondo in Sofala province, have already been completed,” he explained.
Meanwhile, in view of the appearance of these new infrastructures, Mesquita appealed to the communities to make a rational use, reaffirming the Government’s commitment in continuing to build more water supply sources, in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Idai was the strongest tropical cyclone ever to hit Mozambique, with winds of over 200 kilometres per hour, which caused about 600 deaths, destruction of various infrastructures and loss of various goods and crops. The phenomenon that occurred in March 2019, also buffeted neighbouring countries Malawi and Zimbabwe.
