The National Roads Administration (ANE) has banned the circulation of heavy goods vehicles on the R698 road linking the districts of Montepuez and Mueda, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, the Mozambican Information Agency said on Tuesday.
The agency explains that the ban is intended to allow emergency work to be carried out on critical parts of the Muirite-Mueda river section, if the weather conditions are favorable.
According to a statement from ANE, heavy goods vehicles should not use this road from Tuesday (March 26) to April 10.
“At the moment, efforts are being made to re-establish traffic on the N380 road, which links the districts in the northern part of Cabo Delgado province, where the rise in the level of the Messalo River has contributed to damaging the platform of the section of the road that crosses the lower part of this river,” the statement reads.
The agency also said that, due to the heavy rains that have fallen in Cabo Delgado, causing serious damage to the province’s road network, traffic is restricted on some roads. “In this context, ANE calls on road users in general to plan their journeys and transport passengers with extra care during the rainy season and in places of poor visibility, especially in flooded areas and when approaching drainage structures,” the statement said.
The institution also recommends that vehicles weighing more than ten tons should not be driven on dirt roads in rainy weather.
