The rehabilitation plan for the Macúti lighthouse in the city of Beira, Sofala province, foresees an investment of approximately 72 million meticals to restore the infrastructure and reinforce the coastal protection dykes damaged by Cyclone Idai in 2019.
According to the newspaper Noticias, the information was provided by Anabela Chaúque, delegate of the Sofala Maritime Transport Institute, who announced that the work should start in the first half of November.
Chaúque explained that the infrastructure will be expanded and equipped with modern signalling devices for ships. In addition, the project includes a green space in the atrium, which will be open to the public, promoting the valorisation of the site.
‘The project has been designed and approved, the tender has already been launched and awarded and the process is currently at the Maputo Administrative Court for annotation,’ she said.
She added that the lighthouse has been operational for a few months, following the installation of new signalling equipment, but needs updating for a more modern and efficient operation.
The investment in coastal protection aims to repair the dykes that prevent sea water from invading residential areas and other infrastructure. After the damage caused by Cyclone Idai, the rehabilitation of the coastal protection system became one of the priorities for the city of Beira.
