17 Million Meticals Needed for Road Rehabilitation in Niassa

The government authorities of Mavago district in Niassa province estimate at about 17 million meticais the amount necessary to fund the rehabilitation works of the main access roads destroyed by the rains that recently fell in that region.

According to Domingos Binar, substitute director of the District Service of Planning and Infrastructure of Mavago, the availability of the amount will make possible the execution of works which will consist in the placement of aqueducts and pontoons in the access roads that currently do not offer safe transit conditions because they are in a terrible state.

According to the source of Notícias, the platform of the earthworked access roads needs to be replaced by soil that was washed away by rainwater, aggravated by the circulation of heavy vehicles transporting forest products belonging to timber sector operators, among others.

The central government through the National Roads Administration (ANE), annually allocates the districts an estimated 2 million meticais to finance preventive maintenance works of access roads, however, Domingos Binar does not show optimism about the possibility of the district government in managing to mobilize the 17 million meticais to invest in improving access roads.

It should be noted that the provincial authorities of decentralized governance in Niassa are currently engaged in mobilizing financial resources to fund the implementation of rehabilitation works of the road from the Majune crossroads in Mecualo to the district headquarters of Mavago, because it is considered that the alternative to ensure safe transit of that stretch of about one hundred kilometers is its asphalting.

“Due to the precariousness of access roads in Mavago, producers face difficulties in participating in the process of commercialization of agricultural surpluses consisting of flag crops, namely corn, beans, sesame and tobacco,” Notícias reported.
