The World Bank is financing the construction of Mozambique’s first hydraulic infrastructure dedicated to sewage treatment, with an investment of $9 million (568.8 million meticais). The project, located in the city of Tete, is expected to be completed by December.
According to a report by Notícias, the Tete Fecal Sludge Treatment Plant (ETLF) was designed to benefit around 250,000 residents. The works are in an advanced stage, with provisional delivery scheduled for later this year, creating conditions to improve sanitation in the provincial capital.
Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, Fernando Rafael, visited the facility on Tuesday (23) and assured that construction is progressing on schedule. “By December we will have the installation completed with all equipment in place, so that by January the facility can effectively come into operation,” he stated.
According to the minister, the works show a satisfactory level of execution. The December completion will allow for the final installation of equipment, followed by technical testing of operations.
Fernando Rafael further explained that after provisional delivery, tests will be carried out to assess the plant’s capacity. These procedures are essential to ensure the infrastructure meets population needs and complies with quality standards. The minister added that the ETLF is scheduled to begin operations in January 2026.
The project is expected to mark a milestone in sanitation for the city of Tete, contributing to public health and improving residents’ quality of life.
