The Municipal Council of Moatize, in Tete Province, is investing 20 million meticais (approximately 312,000 US dollars) to upgrade a 1.5-kilometer stretch of road. The works cover the “cement zone” and include not only paving but also the rehabilitation of sidewalks and improvement of drainage systems.
According to Carlos Portimão, President of the Moatize Municipal Council, the main goal is to resolve circulation problems caused by potholes, a long-standing concern raised by road users.
“This year, we plan to work on several roads. We’re reopening others and conducting studies as part of an ongoing effort, since we’re using our own revenue. The budget is 20 million meticais,” said the mayor.
Portimão confirmed that the works are progressing well and reiterated the intention to extend the intervention to other areas of the municipality, including neighborhoods outside the “cement zone.”
Drivers and pedestrians expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of the roads, highlighting potholes as a frequent cause of vehicle damage. Nonetheless, they expressed hope that the mobility of people and goods would significantly improve with the ongoing upgrades. “It’s a promising initiative. We would like the municipality to pave all the roads in Moatize,” one driver stated.
