The rehabilitation of the 117-kilometer stretch of National Road 301 (N301), connecting Matambo to Songo in Tete province, has experienced minor delays, but authorities assure that the project timeline will be met.
According to the National Roads Administration (ANE), the delays are mainly due to two factors: the lack of an operating license for a quarry, essential for asphalt production, and the contractor’s decision to prioritize the completion of the Maroeira-Chitima section, inaugurated in June this year.
The first section, between Matambo and Marara (50 kilometers), is awaiting the quarry license. Without this document, asphalt production cannot proceed. The second segment, from Marara to Maroeira (67 kilometers), is progressing slowly because resources are concentrated on finalizing the neighboring road.
Belmiro Rodolfo, director of central project and works services at ANE, confirmed the information during a recent site visit to Maroeira. Despite the setbacks, he remained optimistic about recovering the delays.
“These are temporary and recoverable delays. The forecast remains: the Marara-Maroeira section should be completed by December 2025, while the Matambo-Marara segment will be ready in January 2026,” he stated.
The Matambo-Songo road is a strategic route for agricultural transport and interprovincial connectivity, as well as crucial for access to the Cahora Bassa Dam. Its rehabilitation is part of the government’s efforts to improve road mobility and stimulate economic development in the Tete region.
