Swiss consultant Greg Binkert has expressed his willingness to support Mozambique in mobilizing investments aimed at industrializing the economy and rehabilitating National Highway No. 1 (N1), which is considered strategic for the country’s integration and for boosting economic activity.
He expressed this intention on Wednesday (15), following a meeting with President Daniel Chapo in Lisbon as part of his official visit to Portugal.
According to a report by the Mozambique Information Agency (AIM), the CEO of BD Consulting & Investment, Greg Binkert, stated that the meeting focused on the government’s economic priorities, with an emphasis on economic diversification and the local processing of natural resources.
“We talked at length about the government’s program, particularly regarding economic diversification and how to harness natural resources—whether gas or mineral products—to be processed within the country, create jobs, and drive Mozambique’s development. This is very important,” he said.
According to Binkert, the discussions also covered infrastructure challenges, which were identified as one of the key factors for attracting private investment and accelerating development.
Among the projects considered a priority is the rehabilitation of the EN1, the main highway corridor connecting the north, center, and south of the country. “We discussed infrastructure needs, particularly those of the EN1. The government already has the program in place, and now we need to secure additional funding so that the road can be rehabilitated in the coming years. We will also be working toward that goal,” he said.
The consultant, who has worked for the World Bank in various African countries, assured that he intends to put his international experience to work toward Mozambique’s development goals, now from within the private sector.
“I will assist in these efforts, whether in industrialization—which means diversifying the economy—or in mobilizing funding for infrastructure projects. Without roads, poverty persists,” he emphasized.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of Daniel Chapo’s participation in the EurAfrican Forum 2026, an event at which the Head of State spoke as a guest of honor and participated in a dialogue with the President of the Portuguese Republic, António Seguro, focused on deepening economic cooperation between Africa and Europe.
During his visit to Lisbon, Chapo also held a meeting with the chairman of the EurAfrican Forum, José Manuel Durão Barroso, dedicated to promoting investment opportunities and strengthening institutional relations between the two continents.
