President Highlights Role of Engineering in National Development

The strengthening of engineering and the valuation of national technical professionals in strategic development programmes were at the centre of an audience granted on Wednesday, 27 May, by the Head of State, Daniel Chapo, to the new leadership of the Order of Engineers of Mozambique (OrdEM), according to the Mozambique Information Agency (AIM).

The meeting served for the formal presentation of the new leadership of the professional body and for discussions on the main challenges related to the practice of engineering in the country, including the legality of the profession, the valorisation of engineers, and their participation in the implementation of the national development agenda.

Speaking to the press at the end of the audience, OrdEM’s President, Alberto Tsamba, said the organisation raised concerns regarding the integration of engineering in the State’s strategic programmes.

“We reviewed some concerns regarding the role of engineers in national development, the legality of engineering practice in Mozambique, and the Government’s development agenda, which necessarily involves the participation of engineers,” he stated.

According to Alberto Tsamba, the meeting showed openness from the Head of State regarding the role of engineering in the country’s economic and social growth. “We were very pleased to note that the President of the Republic is highly aware of the importance of engineering in development programmes,” he said.

The President of OrdEM added that the Head of State recognised the cross-cutting nature of engineering in the implementation of major projects.

“He stressed the transversal nature of engineering in any development programme and expressed his commitment to supporting the Order so that engineering can play a leading role in the country’s development,” he said.

The audience took place in a context in which Mozambique is focusing on infrastructure expansion, industrialisation, and economic modernisation, sectors that require greater national technical and scientific capacity.

Within this framework, OrdEM advocates for stronger institutional dialogue between the Government and professional bodies to ensure greater participation of national experts in the design and implementation of strategic projects.

The new leadership of the organisation also considers the promotion of legality in professional practice a priority, at a time when challenges persist regarding the technical quality of public and private works, as well as the valuation of Mozambican engineers.
