Ports of Maputo and Beira Receive Monitorable Signaling Systems to Enhance Safety

The National Institute of Maritime Transport (ITRASMAR) will proceed with the modernization of maritime signaling systems at the ports of Maputo and Beira by introducing monitorable equipment, in an initiative aimed at enhancing navigation safety and improving the ability to respond to potential malfunctions, according to Lusa.

The project essentially involves replacing the current devices with more advanced technology, which has already been acquired, including the installation of new buoys equipped with remote monitoring systems. This equipment will allow for real-time monitoring of the operational status of maritime signaling in the country’s main navigation channels.

According to ITRASMAR’s executive director, Simião Munguambe, the process is in the final phase of equipment procurement for the Port of Maputo, with implementation scheduled to begin immediately after the last batch is received. “The idea is to update navigation safety systems, specifically by introducing monitorable buoys,” he stated.

According to the official, the adoption of this technology will allow for faster intervention in the event of failures in the signaling systems, reducing potential risks to navigation. “This equipment will allow us to intervene in the event of malfunctions in real time,” he added.

The ports of Maputo and Beira account for a significant portion of the country’s maritime traffic; consequently, they require a greater number of navigation aids due to the length of their channels and the intensity of their operations. In contrast, the Port of Nacala, located in Nampula Province, has fewer needs for improvements in this area, benefiting from its natural deep-water characteristics.
