Pemba: City Council Launches Sustainable Urbanisation and Environmental Protection Initiative

The City Council of the city of Pemba, in Cabo Delgado, recently launched a new initiative called ‘Green Cities and Infrastructures’, with the aim of promoting sustainable urbanisation and strengthening environmental protection. This action comes as a response to the growing challenges caused by climate change, seeking to strengthen the city’s resilience through more adapted and sustainable urban planning, according to Rádio Moçambique (RM).

The programme aims to build low-cost infrastructure that is more resistant to the effects of climate change, and includes actions to improve basic sanitation, rainwater drainage and coastal protection against erosion. These measures are in line with the sustainable economic growth strategy, which aims to modernise urban centres and increase the quality of life of their inhabitants.

The first phase of the project will be implemented in the Maringanha and Metula neighbourhoods in the city of Pemba, where interventions will be carried out to organise the urban space, facilitate access to services and make the areas more resilient to adverse climatic phenomena. This initial phase is scheduled to take 16 months to complete.

Abdulremane Chaca, the councillor for Urbanisation and the Environment in Pemba municipality, highlighted the importance of this initiative for the city, stressing that the actions planned will significantly improve the organisation of neighbourhoods and allow greater accessibility to basic services. Chaca also called for the active participation of local communities, which is essential for the success of the programme.

For her part, the coordinator of the ‘Green Cities and Infrastructures’ programme, Ana Chaves, stressed the need for collaboration between all those involved, including municipal authorities, companies and citizens, in order to fully achieve the project’s objectives.

As well as Pemba, the programme will also be implemented in other cities in the country, such as Beira and Nacala, which share similar challenges when it comes to sustainable urban management and environmental protection.

As announced by RM, the project is part of a national effort to tackle the impacts of climate change and encourage the construction of more modern, inclusive and resilient cities.
