The Government of Ireland will invest 406.8 million meticais (USD 6.4 million) in social infrastructure projects in Niassa Province, in northern Mozambique. The announcement was made on Monday, June 30, by provincial authorities.
According to a statement from the Niassa Provincial Executive Council, the funding will be implemented through 2030 and will support the construction of school dormitories, solar-powered water supply systems, a maternal and child health unit, and agricultural irrigation and processing systems, among other initiatives.
These projects aim to improve the agricultural value chain and promote sustainable development in the province.
“Our partnership goes beyond financing. It is about contributing to the promotion of sustainable development and building a dignified future,” said Edgar Ussene, a representative of the Irish Embassy in Niassa, quoted in the statement.
Celestina Teófilo, director of the provincial governor’s office, emphasized that the Irish support places people at the heart of its priorities, ensuring sustainable development outcomes for the region.
“This funding clearly demonstrates a people-centered approach, ensuring that the results last and have a direct impact on local communities,” she stated.
It is worth noting that cooperation between Mozambique and Ireland has strengthened in recent years. In 2022, Ireland provided over 16 million meticais (USD 250,000) in humanitarian aid to support people displaced by terrorism in Niassa Province.
Additionally, the Irish Government committed over 45 million meticais (USD 700,000) to social projects in this northern region.
Provincial authorities believe that this strategic partnership represents an important step in strengthening local capacities — not only in health and education but also in agricultural resilience and access to basic services. The Government of Niassa hopes that the implementation of the Ireland-funded projects will serve as a model for future collaborations with other international development partners.
