Road traffic has been provisionally restored on most roads in Niassa province after damage caused by the heavy rains recorded in recent days, according to the Administração Nacional de Estradas (ANE).
According to the newspaper Notícias, ANE’s delegate in Niassa, Oreste Zezela, explained that $3 million was invested in emergency works aimed at ensuring the resumption of traffic in several communities across the province.
The interventions included the rehabilitation of road platforms and the installation of temporary infrastructure to ensure passability.
Among the main actions carried out was the placement of six deck spans on the bridge over the Nacache River, on National Road Number 360, helping ease traffic between the districts of Maúa and Metarica.
Major works were also undertaken on the regional road R734, on the Metangula–Cobué section, over approximately 170 kilometres, as well as on the N360, between Marrupa and Mecula, across a stretch of 143 kilometres. Interventions also took place on the R720, linking Cuamba to Mecanhelas, on the R733 between Unango and Macaloge over more than 50 kilometres, and on the R1215 along the Macaloge/Nova Madeira–Matchedje route, covering about 125 kilometres.
Despite the progress made, the road connection between the districts of Majune and Mavago remains interrupted due to excess water on the bridge over the Lochesse River, a situation that currently prevents normal traffic at that point.
For a broader and more lasting response to the damage caused by the adverse weather, ANE estimates that an additional $6.2 million will be required to fully rehabilitate the affected road platforms in Niassa province.
