The Mozambican government has announced a series of new infrastructure projects in Zambézia Province, including the construction of a bridge over the Licungo River, a fuel terminal in Quelimane, and a future National Assembly building in Mocuba.
The projects were announced on Saturday (5) by President Daniel Chapo during a visit to the province, which included activities in the districts of Mocuba and Nicoadala, according to O País newspaper.
Among the planned interventions is the construction of a new bridge over the Licungo River, which is intended to strengthen the link between Quelimane and Mocuba and reduce circulation problems during the rainy season. President Chapo stated that the project will be financed by the Millennium Challenge Account, a United States government programme.
In Quelimane, the government is also preparing to construct a new fuel terminal, with a groundbreaking ceremony expected shortly. Chapo explained that the facility could reduce the costs associated with transporting fuel to the city, which is currently supplied from the ports of Beira and Nacala.
The government expects that lower logistics costs will also help reduce fuel supply expenses in Quelimane. A further project announced is the construction of a future National Assembly headquarters in the city of Mocuba, as part of the government's strategy to decentralise certain public institutions. Chapo indicated he would return to the province to officiate at the groundbreaking ceremony.
Beyond infrastructure, the government plans to advance initiatives aimed at supporting entrepreneurship and job creation. In Mocuba, a Business Centre is set to be inaugurated within the Special Economic Zone, integrated into the Acredita Emprega project. The initiative is designed to provide support and financing to young people interested in starting or expanding businesses.
In Nicoadala, the Jobs Now project will also be launched, targeting the financing of business initiatives promoted by young entrepreneurs. 'We know that one of the greatest challenges we face is employment for young people,' President Chapo said. He further indicated that the government intends to continue developing additional projects in Zambézia, including the Port of Macuse, road network expansion, schools, hospitals, and electricity infrastructure.
