The Mozambican government today approved the concession, by direct agreement, to the Operation Water Mozambique company of eight water supply systems in the country, announced the spokesman for the Council of Ministers.
“They are places with chronic problems and without funding perspectives”, so the public-private partnership “is an excellent alternative”, said Filimão Suaze.
The planned investment is 23 million dollars (19 million euros) and the concession period is 30 years.
The company will be responsible for the supply systems of Macia, Nuvunguene, Marromeu, Machanga, Gurué, Morrumbala, Chimbonila and Nipepe.
The Government predicts that the measure will allow water to be brought to an additional 380,000 people.
Official data indicate that only half of the approximately 30 million Mozambicans have access to water supplies.
