Maputo Province: Government Inaugurates Road Valued at USD 8.6 Million on Intaka–Boquisso Section

The Minister of Transport and Logistics, João Matlombe, inaugurated on Saturday, December 20, the Intaka–Boquisso road, located in the municipality of Matola, Maputo province. The infrastructure, valued at USD 8.6 million, stretches over 6.7 kilometers and includes a mixed drainage system and public lighting.

Cited in a publication by the Mozambican News Agency, the minister assured that the Government remains committed to improving the population’s living conditions through the provision of high-quality road infrastructure.

“Our commitment does not need applause, because fulfilling our mission and duty is the reason for our existence as a Government. We swore to serve the people and will always stand by them, in all moments, including the most difficult,” he stated.

According to Matlombe, the project will improve urban mobility, reduce flooding risks, and enhance pedestrian safety, raising the quality of life for residents, particularly in the Intaka, Boquisso, and surrounding areas.

Meanwhile, the governor of Maputo province, Manuel Tule, explained that the newly inaugurated road will accelerate regional development. “More than just an access route, it is a compass for sustainable transformation, as it will reduce travel time and transport costs while boosting economic growth in the covered and neighboring districts,” he said.

In November, Prime Minister Benvinda Levi acknowledged that the country needs approximately USD 2.2 billion by 2029 for the construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation of bridges and roads, noting it as a “major challenge” given the current economic context.

“By prioritizing road infrastructure, we aim to ensure sustainable and balanced territorial development, guaranteeing inclusion and equity in access to public services and effective territorial organization,” stated Benvinda Levi after swearing in Paulo Fumane as the new president of the National Road Administration (ANE) in Maputo.

According to the Prime Minister, “ensuring the construction, maintenance, rehabilitation, and expansion of road infrastructure” is one of the Government’s priorities, as defined in the 2025–29 Five-Year Program, approved in May by the Assembly of the Republic.

The head of government urged the new ANE president to “pursue bold actions to secure and implement strategic road and bridge projects” in a context of scarce resources, advocating for the rational use of available funds and strengthened coordination with the private sector and development partners to mobilize financing for the improvement of the national road network.
