Maputo City: CFM to Build New Car Silo With Capacity for 400 Vehicles

The company Portos e Caminhos-de-Ferro de Moçambique (CFM) plans to build a four-storey car silo in Maputo city by 2035, with capacity for 400 vehicles, with the aim of reducing the parking problem in the capital.

Speaking to Lusa, CFM’s planner, Marcos Pan, said on Monday 22 July that the infrastructure will be built next to Maputo’s central station, close to the recently opened railway passenger terminal, in an area of 3280 square metres.

According to Pan, the car silo is a public-private project, in which CFM will provide the space to be exploited and the private sector will have to contribute with funding to make the project a reality, while also planning to build a shopping centre with at least three floors.

‘Private companies interested in financing the projects must submit their proposals by 8 August in order to get the work underway,’ he said.

In January, Maputo municipality inaugurated an auto silo with the capacity to hold more than 400 vehicles. The infrastructure was valued at 7.2 million dollars and was built with the aim of reducing parking in ‘inappropriate’ places and on pavements.

‘The construction of this project will leave an indelible mark due to the transformations it will introduce into the city of Maputo, since it will influence the reduction of inappropriate occupation of public spaces, namely pavements,’ the institution explained at the time.

The three-storey development can accommodate 424 vehicles and also has 330 stalls and nine shops.
