Malawi Announces February 2026 Inauguration of Power Interconnection Project With Mozambique

The 400-kilovolt (kV) interconnection project between Malawi and Mozambique, known as MOMA, will be inaugurated in February 2026, announced Malawi’s Minister of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining, Jean Mathanga. The initiative aims to strengthen the country’s energy capacity and support industrial development, representing a strategic step for the regional energy sector.

The minister made the announcement on Sunday, 7 December, during a visit to the Phombeya substation in Balaka. She explained that the MOMA project is behind schedule, but that nearly 90% of the work has been completed.

“This project is revolutionary and by February 2026 we will have an additional 400 kV, which will change the country’s energy landscape,” she said, emphasising the importance of the investment for the population.

Mathanga reinforced that reliable energy is essential for economic and industrial development.

“We are exploring every avenue regarding energy sources, and when I say this, it’s because we are serious. We recognise that industrial growth depends on reliable and affordable energy,” she stated, assuring Malawians that there will be no power cuts in the near future.

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM), Sinosi Maliano, said the minister’s visit demonstrates how seriously the Government values ESCOM’s role. According to him, the project will significantly increase the country’s energy capacity, allowing the population to start experiencing benefits soon.

During the visit, Jean Mathanga also praised the corporate social responsibility initiatives implemented by ESCOM as part of the MOMA project, including the construction of housing and community infrastructure. These actions reinforce the project’s positive impact on local communities and contribute to strengthening the energy sector.

The MOMA project is part of Malawi’s strategy to guarantee stable, accessible and reliable energy, seen as essential for attracting investment and consolidating industrial growth. The minister reaffirmed that the Government’s priority is to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply, preventing disruptions that may affect citizens and businesses.

With its inauguration scheduled for February 2026, the interconnection project between Malawi and Mozambique is expected to transform the regional energy landscape. Beyond increasing energy generation and distribution capacity, MOMA will contribute to sustainable socioeconomic development and to building a more resilient energy grid.
