Inhambane: Government Launches National Housing Project Focused on Youth and Sustainable Urbanization

President of the Republic Daniel Chapo officially launched the “Terra” Infrastructure Project on Thursday, July 31, in Faiquete, Vilankulo district, Inhambane Province. This national initiative aims to increase access to decent housing and promote sustainable urbanization across the country, according to the Xinhua News Agency.

During the launch ceremony, 1,200 serviced plots of land were handed over, already equipped with roads, water supply systems, and electric power infrastructure. The project, with an initial investment of 40 million meticais (approx. USD 632,211), is designed to address the country’s housing deficit, particularly among the youth, who represent 60% of Mozambique’s population.

The government’s strategy includes:

  • Regulating the real estate market to reduce construction costs;
  • Promoting the use of local building materials;
  • Developing integrated community infrastructure (such as schools, health centers, and recreational areas);
  • Fostering public-private partnerships to raise funding and introduce sustainable construction technologies.

President Chapo also emphasized the inclusion of climate resilience measures, such as drainage systems to prevent flooding and the preservation of natural lagoons, which have tourism development potential in the targeted areas.

Addressing the beneficiaries — especially the youth — Chapo urged them to respect construction deadlines and make regular financial contributions, which he described as essential for the continuity and sustainability of the project.

“These plots are a step toward reducing rural migration and building resilient cities,” he stated.

As part of this national plan, the government intends to develop 49,000 serviced plots in various regions of the country, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
