More than 15 classified and unclassified roads are experiencing restricted traffic due to rains in the provinces of Nampula, Niassa, Zambézia, and Sofala. Technical teams from the National Road Administration (ANE) have not yet assessed the full extent of the damage.
The rains, which are falling across the country and are more intense in the central and northern provinces, have already caused damage to road infrastructure in Nampula, Niassa, Zambézia, and Sofala. In a press release, the National Road Administration reported the inaccessibility of some roads due to flooding and damage to bridges.
In Nampula province, the roads Nametil-Chalaua; Nacala-a-Velha – Memba; Ribaue – Lalaua, and Mecubúri – Muite are impassable due to flooding and bridge washouts.
In Niassa, the connections Madjune – Mavago, Metangula – Cobwe; Marrupa – Mecula, and Cuamba – Mecanhelas have some sections restricted due to flooding and bridge washouts. The ANE recommends the use of four-wheel-drive vehicles and checking updated information on each route beforehand.
Access roads Maganja da Costa – Mocubela in Zambézia province and Guara Guara – Buzi in Sofala province are also impassable due to rising water levels, washouts, and road closures, according to the release.
