Governments of Mozambique and Zimbabwe Aim to Establish One-Stop Border Posts by the End of 2026

The governments of Mozambique and Zimbabwe announced on Saturday, November 22, their intention to establish one-stop border posts at the Machipanda border in Manica Province and along the border with Tete Province by the third quarter of 2026.

“We have also agreed to finalize the framework agreement for the creation of the one-stop border post, focusing on Machipanda [Manica] and Nyampanda Cuchamano [Tete] by the end of the third quarter of 2026,” said Zimbabwean President Emerson Mnangagwa during a joint press conference as part of his state visit to Mozambique.

According to Mnangagwa, the two governments also agreed to implement trade facilitation measures between the two countries by eliminating tariff and non-tariff barriers to trade, under the frameworks of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

“We emphasized this as an important component and benchmark for economic development and sustainable development. In particular, we focused on measures to improve efficiency in the movement of petroleum products through the port of Beira,” he added, referring to prior meetings held between the parties shortly before the press conference.

The Zimbabwean president also stated that the two countries agreed to establish a dry port in the Dondo district, Sofala Province, in central Mozambique, to enhance the use of the Beira Development Corridor. “This benefits not only our countries but the entire region as a whole,” he said, highlighting the importance of continued collaboration and benchmarking between the two countries in the energy and transport sectors.

As part of Mnangagwa’s state visit, the governments of Mozambique and Zimbabwe also signed three memoranda of understanding to promote cooperation in social and economic areas, with a focus on women’s development and the promotion of cooperatives.

These memoranda cover women’s development and gender issues, youth cooperation, and cooperation to promote the development of cooperatives and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).
