The Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Estevão Pale, announced on Monday, September 22, that the country has reached 62.4% electricity coverage, moving closer to the goal of universal access by 2030, reported the newspaper O País.
“In the first half of this year, we electrified two administrative post headquarters in Nampula and Zambézia, completed 196,600 new grid connections and 67,600 off-grid connections, totaling 264,300 new connections. This is another step in increasing access to energy, moving toward the goal of providing electricity to all Mozambicans by 2030,” said the minister during the opening of the “10th Coordinating Council of the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy” (MIREME).
The minister also emphasized the government’s commitment to completing regional interconnection projects, including the Mozambique–Malawi, Mozambique–Zambia, and Mozambique–Tanzania lines, aiming to position the country as a regional energy hub.
In the mining sector, Estevão Pale announced the issuance of 1,858 exploration titles in the first half of 2025 alone, corresponding to 69 applications submitted this year. “As a result of ongoing actions, in close coordination with the Tax Authority, we collected 301.3 million meticais (USD 4.71 million) in revenues through the recovery of tax debts. Additionally, 223.4 million meticais (USD 3.50 million) in enforceable guarantees were identified, which will be allocated to the State to support the rehabilitation and closure of abandoned mines,” he added.
Regarding hydrocarbons, the minister highlighted the performance of the Coral South FLNG project, operational since 2022, which has already exported 120 shipments of liquefied natural gas and 17 shipments of condensate to the international market, generating over USD 235 million (15 billion meticais) in revenue.
The two-day 10th Coordinating Council will assess sector performance, analyze the implementation of activities, and review the governing legal instruments, particularly the laws currently under revision.
