The government announced the withdrawal of management of three roads in Gaza province from the public company Rede Viária de Moçambique (REVIMO). The decision was communicated by the government spokesperson and Minister of State Administration, Inocêncio Impissa, who explained that the contracts had become unviable due to accumulated losses.
The roads in question connect Bilene to Macia, Macia to Chókwè, and Chókwè to Macarretane, totaling 117.7 kilometers. Despite collecting tolls, REVIMO was unable to generate enough revenue to cover operational costs, as traffic volumes remained well below initial projections.
“The low level of traffic and, consequently, revenue, combined with high operational costs, contradicts the projections made at the time of signing the contract,” stated Impissa. The government has authorized the Ministries of Transport and Finance to create a commission to assess new ways of managing the infrastructure and ensure the continuity of road maintenance.
REVIMO had assumed management of these roads in July 2021, without a public tender, under a contract initially planned to last 20 years.
At the same press conference, the spokesperson also revealed concerning data on road accidents. Between January and August 2025, there were 430 traffic accidents, compared to 410 during the same period last year. The number of fatalities rose from 504 to 575, representing an increase of 14%. “We are facing a serious challenge in road safety,” emphasized Impissa, adding that Mozambique currently has a rate of 30.1 deaths from traffic accidents per 100,000 inhabitants.
