The government is seeking investors to make the Mapai dam construction project in Gaza province, valued at $1.2 billion, viable. The initiative is expected to move forward through a public-private partnership. The goal is to mobilize resources for the subsequent phases of the project.
The information was released on Wednesday (11) in Parliament by the Minister of State Administration and Civil Service, Inocêncio Impissa. The minister was speaking during the “Questions to the Government” session requested by the parliamentary benches. The meeting was intended to provide clarification on various actions taken by the Executive.
According to Inocêncio Impissa, the mobilization of investors aims to ensure the continuity of the project after the initial phase. The public-private partnership model should allow for private sector participation in the development of the infrastructure. In this way, the Government hopes to ensure the financial viability of the project.
The planned phases include the preparation of the executive project, the construction of the infrastructure, and the future operation of the dam. These stages are considered essential for the project’s completion. The Executive believes that the involvement of the private sector could accelerate the implementation of the work.
According to Inocêncio Impissa, the Mapai dam will have an estimated capacity of more than 7.2 billion cubic meters of water. The infrastructure is expected to play an important role in water resource management in the south of the country and is seen as strategic for the region.
The dam could also contribute to controlling the flow of the Limpopo River. With this intervention, the government hopes to reduce the impact of floods that frequently affect local communities. At the same time, the infrastructure should create conditions for the expansion of irrigated agriculture in Gaza province.
In addition, the project could strengthen water security for communities and boost local and regional development. The government believes that the dam should also stimulate different economic activities, as it is seen as strategic for the region’s economic growth.
