The public company Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) has committed to implementing an integrated district electrification plan to ensure the availability of electricity in production centers even before the installation of new industries, reported on Sunday, August 31, by the Mozambican News Agency (AIM).

The vision was shared by EDM’s Director of Transmission, Luís Amado, in an interview with AIM, in which he emphasized that the goal is to reverse the current logic, where industries are established first and the electrical network arrives afterward.
“We need to have an integrated plan so that, as a State, we can anticipate the arrival of industries. Before they arrive, the infrastructure must be ready, the electrical network must be in place, and the power plants must be operational so that when companies arrive, we avoid the problem of chasing energy,” he stressed.
According to Luís Amado, until now EDM has operated reactively, which weakens its ability to meet the demands of industrialization. The goal is to ensure electricity is available throughout the country, avoiding constraints at the start of industrial projects.
In addition to expanding coverage, EDM considers it essential to strengthen the robustness of the network and offer competitive prices for industry. “Today, there are very clear signs that EDM needs to be competitive. We need energy sources that allow affordable prices, so that industries can absorb them, which is directly related to power plants and infrastructure up to the customer,” stated the director.
He also highlighted the need to diversify the energy matrix, exploiting Mozambique’s various available resources to reduce risks and ensure adequate supply. “It is no longer the same reality as ten years ago. Today, we need more power plants coming online. We must take advantage of the country’s potential and diversify the matrix, so that we have plants in various regions close to production centers,” he explained.
With ongoing megaprojects in natural resource exploration and expected industrial production growth, EDM believes it will play a central role in the national industrialization process. “The country will need a lot of energy. Resource extraction, manufacturing industries, and large-scale projects will only be viable if we have a reliable, diversified, and competitive electrical network,” concluded Luís Amado.
