Mozambique Ports and Railways (CFM) is preparing the second phase of the duplication of the Ressano Garcia railway line, a project aimed at increasing freight transport capacity and enhancing the efficiency of the Maputo Logistics Corridor, one of the country’s most important transport routes and a key regional trade corridor.
According to the Mozambique Information Agency (AIM), the announcement was made by CFM through a statement published on its official platforms. The company said the new phase forms part of its broader programme to expand and modernise Mozambique’s railway infrastructure in response to growing demand for freight transport services.
CFM noted that the first phase of the railway duplication increased the corridor’s annual freight capacity from approximately 13 million tonnes to 24 million tonnes, significantly strengthening the competitiveness of the Maputo Corridor.
“The duplication of the Ressano Garcia railway line has significantly increased rail freight capacity along the Maputo Corridor,” the company said.
The second phase of the project will involve duplicating additional sections of the railway, allowing more trains to operate on the line while improving the flow of goods between Mozambique and South Africa.
The Ressano Garcia railway is one of Mozambique’s most important transport infrastructures, providing a vital rail connection to the South African market and playing a strategic role in regional integration, international trade and the country’s economic development.
