Cabo Delgado: EDM Confirms Collapse of High-Voltage Tower

Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) confirmed on Wednesday (11) the collapse of a high-voltage tower on the Namialo-Metoro stretch, leaving Cabo Delgado province without electricity supply. The infrastructure is part of the line connecting Nampula to Cabo Delgado and is considered strategic for the region’s power supply.

The incident occurred on one of the country’s main transmission lines in the north, responsible for transporting electricity between the two provinces. The disruption affected the regular power supply in several areas of Cabo Delgado.

According to the company, the tower collapsed due to progressive soil erosion where the structure was installed. The situation was worsened by heavy and persistent rains in the northern region over the past few days, increasing ground instability.

EDM explained that continuous rainfall, combined with soil fragility, compromised the tower’s foundation, leading to its collapse. Technical teams have been on-site since February 6, but recovery work faces challenges due to muddy ground and heavy rains, which limit access to the affected area.

These conditions have delayed the start of the tower replacement operations. Nevertheless, the company assured that every effort is being made to overcome the constraints and proceed with the restoration of the infrastructure. Additional resources have been mobilized to accelerate the reconstruction of the tower and restore electricity supply to the affected areas as quickly as possible. EDM emphasized that the priority is to return the service to normal.

In a statement addressed to customers and the general public, the company warned that during this period, “all electrical installations should be considered as permanently live” for safety reasons. EDM regretted the inconvenience caused to the population of Cabo Delgado and reiterated its commitment to improving the quality of services provided.
