The Government of Algeria is negotiating the installation of a 1,000-megawatt (MW) power plant in Mozambique, according to Algerian Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies Murad Ajal, following a meeting with a Mozambican delegation in the capital, Algiers.
According to a statement cited this Thursday (21) by Lusa, the initiative falls within the goal of “promoting Algeria’s African dimension and improving cooperation relations with African countries, especially in the field of expanding continental cooperation.”
The same statement notes that Murad Ajal received a high-level Mozambican government delegation composed of “officials and experts in the energy sector” to discuss various issues related to bilateral cooperation in the energy field.
During the meeting, both sides discussed joint projects between the two countries, with emphasis on the planned construction of a power plant intended to strengthen Mozambique’s energy capacity.
“The minister addressed the joint cooperation project between the two countries, specifically related to the completion of a 1,000 MW power plant for the benefit of Mozambique, based on Algerian expertise in this field,” the statement reads.
The document also highlights Algeria’s “significant productive capacities” in electrical equipment and accessories, particularly those related to medium- and high-voltage power stations.
According to the statement, the project could strengthen Mozambique’s energy capacity and enable the country to export electricity to six neighbouring African countries.
Currently, Mozambique’s largest electricity generation facility is the Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric Plant (HCB), one of the largest in Africa, with an installed capacity of 2,075 MW, accounting for more than 80% of the country’s total production.
