The district of Moatize, in the province of Tete, central Mozambique, will be home to the first iron factory, produced from coking coal, the Minister of Industry and Trade, Silvino Moreno, announced on Sunday, 20 October, during a working visit to Malawi.
Without revealing the origin of the capital, Moreno assured that the company will be set up in an area where there is abundant raw material to make the project viable, stressing that it comes in fulfilment of the presidential initiative ‘Industrialise Mozambique’, launched by the head of state, Filipe Nyusi, on 6 August 2021.
‘It is by transforming Moatize coal locally that production can be stimulated and its raw export reduced, ensuring greater commercialisation, as well as generating employment and income,’ he explained, quoted by Radio Moçambique.
The government official also said that various other projects are underway to help develop the country, and that he is ready to receive more foreign investment in various areas.
Coking coal and its descriptions
Coking coal is a by-product of mineral coal. It is obtained through a process known as coking, in which coal is subjected to high temperatures in the absence of oxygen. Coke appears at the end of burning in the form of a solid, porous residue.
