MozParks and Kenmare Form Joint Venture To Build Industrial Park in Topuito, Nampula

MozParks Holding and Kenmare Moma Mining (Mauritius) Limited, have signed a memorandum of understanding that formalises the constitution of a joint venture for the construction of an industrial park and establishment of a free trade zone in Topuito, Nampula province.

The partnership is presented with the objective of stimulating economic growth, generate employment, attract investors to Topuito, engage and work in partnership with local communities and businesses.

Under the terms of the understanding between the two companies, the “Topuito Industrial Park” (PIT) will act as a development driver within the province by generating income for over 100,000 (ten thousand) people.

“The PIT will provide an adequate and specialized infrastructure to promote economic growth, collaboration, efficiency and sustainability in the industrial sector,” the two companies note in a joint statement.

The two companies commit to integrate their experiences to ensure the success of the initiative.

Under the terms of the agreement, MozParks will be responsible for providing the primary infrastructure for investors and for maintaining direct contact with partners and public authorities. As manager of the Topuito Industrial Park, MozParks will take charge of its maintenance and provide support to tenant companies. In addition, it will facilitate the bidding for local content for Kenmare contracts, and offer internship, training and certification programmes for small and medium enterprises, including supporting agro-processing initiatives and providing shared support services such as business registration and local skills development.

Kenmare will in turn encourage its suppliers and service providers to invest and establish their business operations in the ITP and provide support during the construction phase by securing water and power supplies from its substation. Kenmare will also work with MozParks to secure donor funding for the park’s infrastructure and facilities.

During the operational phase, Kenmare will actively promote local businesses and opportunities, and support reforestation and corporate social responsibility initiatives.

A source from Kenmare says the company sees the establishment of the Topuito industrial park in the post-mining area as a world-class case study that will bring significant benefits to local communities and to Mozambique as a whole.

MozParks and Kenmare reiterate that they are committed to supporting economic development and promoting employability in Mozambique.
