Mozambique to Start Testing Steel Quality Later This year

After success in its work on the certification of construction cement, the Mozambique Engineering Laboratory (LEM) intends to start testing and certifying steel, both locally produced and imported, later this year.

In statements on the sidelines of the reflection meeting on the civil construction sector in Maputo, LEM researcher Rodrigues Manjate said that, as a result of the successful certification scheme, the national cement industry is already exporting for some foreign markets.

The next phase, he said, would focus on companies that produce reinforced concrete for the construction sector. Reinforced concrete, also called ferro-concrete, is a composite material in which steel is embedded in the concrete to strengthen it.

Meanwhile, in the medium term, the quality of the steel will also be subject to testing and certification.
