Mozambique Hosts First Edition of Welding Olympics to Promote Technical and Professional Skills

Mozambique will host the first edition of the Welding Olympics, a national competition dedicated to recognizing and promoting technical and professional skills, with a focus on welding.

The event will take place at the Instituto Industrial e Comercial da Matola (IICM) in Matola city on Friday, September 5, aiming to build bridges between training centers and companies, strengthening the link between academic qualifications and labor market needs.

According to a press release, the competition will bring together about 20 participants, including trainees, trainers, and professionals, who will be evaluated through practical tests of varying complexity. Tasks will involve the use of TIG, MIG/MAG, and coated electrode technologies—different processes used to join metals—assessed by certified experts.

The challenges will test skills such as interpreting instructions and technical drawings, handling tools and equipment, and applying workplace safety standards, with time limits and varying difficulty levels.

Frederico Silva, CEO of Talento—a Mozambican company organizing leadership training fairs and events and responsible for the Olympics—stated that the initiative aims to position technical education as a priority for young people and strengthen ties between companies and educational institutions to improve employability in the country.

The competition will also be documented in an audiovisual series inspired by MasterChef, featuring short episodes, participant presentations, and public voting in categories like “popular vote,” fostering engagement on social media and involving the wider community.

The closing ceremony will feature award presentations, a talent fair, the launch of a digital platform for the sector, exhibition areas for sponsors, networking sessions, and a panel discussion on the future of technical training in the country.

The initiative comes at a time when technical education is still often seen by young people as less prestigious than higher education, despite the growing demand for skilled labor in strategic sectors. It also coincides with Mozambique’s efforts to consolidate infrastructure and exploit natural resources, emphasizing the importance of valuing technical talent.

The event is organized by Talento, in partnership with Instituto Industrial e Comercial da Matola, with financial support from the German business association and vocational training provider KH-Kreishandwerkerschaft Steinfurt-Warendorf. Sponsors include ExxonMobil Mozambique, the Port of Maputo, engineering and construction companies TRI-M and FPB, and Field Ready—an organization that trains young people for the labor market—as well as partners such as the Mozambique Industrial Association (AIMO) and the Mozambique Local Content Association (ACLM).
