President Daniel Chapo inaugurated a slaughterhouse and a sausage production plant in the district of Macate, in the central province of Manica. The facility, known as the Planalto Fresh Produce Agro-Industrial Complex, had a budget of 200 million meticais.
The facility has the capacity to slaughter 100 animals per day and produce eight tons of sausage. The plant is located on a one-hectare site and currently employs 31 people, 11 of whom are women.
Production is geared toward the domestic market, with the aim of reducing imports of pork and pork products. During his three-day working visit to Manica province, the head of state called for increased agricultural production to reduce dependence on foreign imports.
“We are seeing, for example, the fuel crisis, which has consequently driven up the price of basic necessities. The best way to alleviate the impacts of this crisis is to work the land and produce food to escape economic dependence,” said the President.
“No country can develop while its people go hungry. It is necessary for all Mozambicans, wherever they may be, to work the land to ensure access to basic food products,” he added.
The President also explained that the country has vast areas of arable land that can be used to grow essential crops, such as tomatoes, onions, cabbage, and other everyday foods.
“If we produce these foods, we can lower the cost of the products that end up on our tables. There are products we don’t need to import because they can be grown in our backyards, neighborhoods, and communities,” he said.
