The governments of Mozambique and China will invest $333 million (21 billion meticais) in the construction of two cement factories, a quay bridge, and the improvement of hospital services in the Mozambican provinces of Nampula and Cabo Delgado. The announcement was made through a statement from Mozambique’s Ministry of Economy, cited by Lusa.
The investment follows four agreements signed in October during an investment conference held in Xi’an, Shaanxi province, China. This initiative aims to strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries and promote the development of northern Mozambique.
According to the statement, the funds will be used for the construction of the two cement production units, the quay bridge, and the enhancement of hospital services, although the start date for the works has not yet been disclosed.
The conference in Xi’an also aimed to reinforce economic cooperation with Shaanxi province in several sectors, including energy, agro-processing, industry, tourism, hydrocarbons (oil and gas), transport, logistics, digital transformation, and skills development.
The event created investment opportunities for Chinese companies in Mozambique, increasing China’s economic presence in the country. The Mozambican delegation included around 50 representatives, led by Minister of Economy Basílio Muhate, who conducted the negotiations and signing of the agreements. According to the Ministry of Economy, the investments and cooperation resulting from the conference will contribute to the economic development of Nampula and Cabo Delgado provinces, strengthening infrastructure and essential services for the local population.
