Farmac Sales Dropped Below 2 Million USD in 2024

The state-owned company Farmácias de Moçambique (Farmac) announced that sales declined last year, reaching 127.7 million meticais (1.9 million dollars), compared to 198.5 million meticais (3 million dollars) recorded in 2023.

In a report published by Lusa, the entity explained that the sales reduction was linked to stock shortages experienced throughout 2024. “During the analyzed period, losses amounted to 26.4 million meticais (409 thousand dollars).”

“Equity, which was negative, surged sharply within one year, from 963 thousand meticais (14.9 thousand dollars) in 2023 to 25.5 million meticais (395 thousand dollars),” added the state company. According to the information, Farmac is 100% owned by the Mozambican State and is engaged in retail trade of medicines, supplements, and other health products in the country, operating 28 pharmacies nationwide with 110 employees. The company has a share capital of 60 million meticais, fully subscribed by the State.

In 2024, purchases “continued to be associated with sales capacity, stabilizing pharmacy sales despite poor supply due to the financial situation” of the company. In 2023, Farmac’s CEO, Eusébio Macete, stated that the institution was adopting and developing strategies to benefit various stakeholder groups, emphasizing that “both internally and externally, several transformations were underway aimed at satisfying user expectations.”

“We have a considerable number of well-stocked pharmacies, able to positively respond to medical prescriptions at a rate above 80%. Similarly, in 2019, the company invested in establishing and operating the Compounded Medications Preparation Unit for magistral prescriptions as well as to provide therapeutic alternatives,” Macete revealed.
