CTA Advocates Local Processing of Natural Resources to Accelerate Industrialization

The Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique (CTA) reiterated the strategic importance of local processing of natural resources as a pillar for the country’s industrialization and the promotion of a more inclusive economy.

According to an official statement, this position was defended by the vice president of the organization, Onório Manuel, during a business meeting held in Maputo, as part of the visit of a business delegation from Shandong Province, People’s Republic of China.

On the occasion, Onório Manuel emphasized the full openness of the Mozambican private sector to Chinese investment, with special emphasis on partnerships that allow raw materials to be transformed into higher-value products within the national territory. The CTA believes that China could play a crucial role in this process through technology transfer, installation of processing units, and the establishment of solid industrial partnerships.

The CTA highlighted three priority areas for the private sector:

  1. Strengthening local content with real impact, including participation of Mozambican companies in the supply of goods and services, use of domestic raw materials, and integration into projects with potential equity participation.
  2. Development of the basic industry, focusing on refining and processing minerals, natural gas processing, and the creation of industrial hubs with internal value addition.
  3. Regulatory stability and improvement of the business environment, with clear rules, simplified procedures, and effective institutional coordination.

The CTA vice president also invited Chinese businesspeople to participate in the 20th Annual Private Sector Conference (CASP), scheduled for November 12-14 in Maputo.

Meanwhile, the Secretary of State for Mineral Resources, Jorge Gerson Daúdo, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reforms promoting local processing of mineral resources and ensuring a secure investment environment, with a focus on sustainability and local content.

The representative of the Chinese Embassy in Mozambique, Wu Jinjia, praised the strong bilateral relations and highlighted the progress achieved in recent years in various areas of cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), particularly in trade, agriculture, infrastructure, energy, and mineral resources.
