Chinese Company Plans to Invest in Steel Factory Construction in Mozambique

The Chinese business group Wang-Kang Safira, a multinational operating in Mozambique since 2024 and owner of one of Africa’s largest ceramics factories, plans to invest in the construction of a new steel factory based on domestic coal.

According to projections reported by Lusa, the facility will be located in northern Mozambique and aims to boost local mineral processing and the production of industrial goods.

He also revealed plans for the construction of a major iron factory and the development of a special economic zone in Moamba district, in Maputo province (southern Mozambique), where the Safira Mozambique Ceramic plant is already operating. That factory was inaugurated in September 2024.

Safira Mozambique Ceramic was opened by former President Filipe Nyusi and represents a $140 million investment. It was built under the “Industrialize Mozambique” program, with the primary goal of reducing the country’s dependence on imported construction materials.
