A total of 49 tons of fish was seized during the shrimp sealing period, which ends next Wednesday.
The product in question is valued at about eight million Meticais, because they are juvenile species, an amount that would triple if they were adults.
According to the director of operations of the Ministry of Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries (MIMAIP), Leonild Chimarizene, the fishermen who catch the juvenile species, during the ban period, sell the product at derisory prices.
“It is these aspects that the artisanal fishermen spread throughout the country do not realize. Just to have an idea, in this closed season, the country lost about 20 million Meticais due to these practices”.
To face this scenario, according to the MIMAIP director of operations, it is necessary to improve the legislation as a way to facilitate the inspectors’ activity.
In this context, land patrols have been strengthened, culminating in the confiscation of products in circulation and in the markets.
