Government Ponders ‘Curbing’ Chicken Imports in the Face of Increased Domestic Production

The livestock sector grew 9% in 2020, with emphasis on the poultry industry that had a production of more than 10 thousand tons of chicken and more than 2.9 million dozens of eggs.

The country is moving quickly to achieve self-sufficiency in chicken production, thanks to new investments that are being made in the sector.

Data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADER), indicate that as a result of the injection of financial resources from investors there is also an increase in productivity levels of hatching eggs and chicks, in a context in which the Government has cut the import quotas of chicken.

The results show that even in the face of economic difficulties and impacts caused by the covid-19 pandemic and terrorism in northern Cabo Delgado, poultry farming has maintained the growth rate of recent years, as well as agriculture in general.

“Given this scenario, I was in conversation with the Minister of Industry and Commerce to see if it was possible to stop importing chickens or even pieces. But we thought it was better to wait a little longer and not to rush. It is our wish to produce in abundance and after that, to take decisions with more precision and durability”, said the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, during the launching, this Friday, of the Agrarian Campaign 2021 – 2022, in Vandúzi, Manica province.

At the event, the Head of State began by announcing that the projections of growth in agriculture, in the past agrarian campaign, were surpassed.
“We projected to grow 3.1%, but we achieved a robust growth in the sector of 8.2%, that is to say that we were much above the forecasts,” said Filipe Nyusi.

The perspective in 2021 is that there will be new advances at all levels in national production.
