The Government approved this Tuesday, by decree, the extinction of the public company Correios de Moçambique, as part of the restructuring plan of the state business sector. This is one of the assets that represented the greatest concerns in the State’s accounts.
“All public companies or participated by the State are being visited. This time it was the Mozambique Post Office, having been found that it is not in the category of strategic and structuring for the Government,” said the Minister of Economy and Finance, Adriano Maleiane, moments after a Council of Ministers session in Maputo.
The services provided by the Mozambique Post Office will be made assured by the private sector, in a process whose conclusion is foreseen for the end of this year, and that the company will continue to operate until the end of 2021.
Last year alone, the Mozambique Post Office accumulated 349 thousand dollars of losses, a result associated with the outbreak of covid-19.
It should be noted that even before the covid-19 pandemic, the company was going through a complicated period, with the 2019 accounts showing that the company owed more than 50 million meticais in salaries to employees, a consequence of the decline in the number of customers and volume of operations, which has been gradual, over the past few years and which has increasingly put the public company’s accounts in the red.
In addition to the Mozambique Post Office, at Tuesday’s session, the government also decided to extinguish the Mozambican Mining Exploration Company and sell its stake in DOMUS – Real Estate Management Society.
“For all these three companies, the Institute for Management of State Holdings is mandated to implement the subsequent stages, which will lead to their liquidation,” added the Minister of Economy and Finance.
