The Mozambican government announced today that it will acquire 100 new buses by August to strengthen the public transport fleet, which has a large deficit, it said in a statement.
“The investment is estimated at around six million dollars (five million euros) and aims to meet demand in the greater Maputo region, where the situation is considered to be critical,” it said.
The problem has worsened with the crowding restrictions imposed by covid-19’s prevention measures and with the night curfew in the capital region.
The lack of transportation has prevented many people from returning home before 9 p.m., as stipulated by the government.
“Of a total of 100 buses to be acquired, 80 will be gas-powered and the remaining 20 diesel-powered, a measure aimed at reducing operating costs,” the government concludes.
