The operations director of the National Inspectorate of Economic Activities (INAE), Leonor Mabutana, revealed that awareness-raising and inspection activities are underway in commercial establishments and markets to prevent price speculation during the festive season.
Cited in a report by the Mozambican Information Agency (AIM), she explained that the activities are being carried out in coordination with multidisciplinary teams and that fixed brigades have been set up in large commercial establishments and markets to ensure that the prices charged are fair.
“The work is being carried out all over the country, and the brigades check the price applied and compare it with the cost of the product, from the time it is purchased to the place where it is sold. This method serves to prevent speculation and to observe maximum profit margins. So far we’ve still detected unpleasant situations,” he said.
In terms of stocks of basic necessities, Leonor Mabutana said that the highlights were national tomatoes, with 182 tonnes, potatoes and onions, with eight and six tonnes respectively.
With regard to eggs, she said that there are still restrictions on their import, due to the strain of bird flu that recently resulted in the slaughter of 45,000 hens across the country.
