In the country, there is currently only one Arbitration and Mediation Center, located in the city of Maputo, which, according to Abdul Carimo, president of the association, does not help in the resolution of disputes in other provinces, thus suggesting the expansion of the entity.
“There are people who are living in Nampula and who, when preparing their contracts, choose the Arbitration Center of the city of Maputo to settle disputes, which involves many costs,” explained Abdul Carimo, on Tuesday (30) during the 1st International Arbitration Conference.
According to him, the existence of more centers would make the arbitration system more functional and evolved in Mozambique, would represent an influential factor in improving the business environment and would stimulate the emergence of more and better national and foreign investment.
In turn, the president of the Commission for the Internationalization of Arbitration, Gilberto Correia, said that the greater the dynamism of arbitration, the easier it will be to promote economic growth in the commercial sector.
“We have an Arbitration Law that already needs reforms, since it is already four years old. We have law schools that still do not have specific training in terms of masters in arbitration, we have a legal community that still does not have specific knowledge about arbitration, therefore, this is a situation that we want to reverse,” said Gilberto Correia.
Organized by the Commercial Arbitration Center of the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the meeting, which took place in Maputo, aimed to train and inform interested parties about the benefits, constraints and specific elements of commercial arbitration, as well as to contribute to the dynamization and improvement of the quality and efficiency of trade in the country.
On the occasion, important issues on the Mozambican arbitration reality were addressed, with the presence of renowned specialists from several Portuguese-speaking countries, especially Mozambique, Portugal and Angola.
