The Board of Directors of the Confederation of Economic Associations (CTA) of Mozambique has decided not to include businessman Álvaro Massingue in the race for the presidency of that organisation, and to remove him from all activities for a period of 12 months.
According to a statement quoted by Agência de Informação de Moçambique, the decision was taken at an extraordinary session held on 17 April, following a case brought against Massingue, who is accused of illegal practices aimed at interfering in the internal elections.
Other accusations against Massingue – who is also president of the Mozambican Chamber of Commerce (CCM) – include the regularisation of quotas for a number of associations that are part of the CTA, an action that aims to make them eligible to vote and, as a result, influence their vote.
‘By means of a notice of decision in disciplinary case no. 01/CD/2025, the Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique, through its Board of Directors, took the decision to remove Álvaro Massingue from all activities as a member for a period of one year, a fact that also prohibits him from participating and running in the elections for the presidency to succeed Agostinho Vuma,’ the document states.
The CTA explains that the measures are aimed at preserving the institutional integrity and fairness of the electoral process, preventing Massingue, having acted ‘maliciously to manipulate’ the electoral roll, from benefiting from indirect ways to circumvent the effects of the disciplinary sanction imposed on him because of his personal and representative conduct.
The date for this year’s election was decided by the 5th Civil Chamber of the Judicial Court of the Kampfumo district, in Maputo city, in a ballot in which the winner will have to replace Agostinho Vuma. So far, only the candidacy of businessman Lineu Candeeiro has been formalised .
