More than 750Km of roads will be rehabilitated and reconstructed starting this month this month in Zambézia province, in the context of the Integrated Rural Roads Development Project financed by the Government and the World Bank in an investment of 3.4 billion meticais.
The districts contemplated with this investment are Pebane, Mocubela, Maganja da Costa, Morrumbala, Lugela, Luabo and Chinde, all located in the Zambezi valley, a region with enormous potential for development. The provincial delegate of the National Roads Administration (ANE), Jorge Govahica, said yesterday, in Pebane, at the end of a monitoring work in the road sector in the rainy and cyclonic season that the works execution are in the initial phase.
He explained that the contractors are, at this moment, in the phase of mobilization and execution of preliminary works, namely dethroning, cleaning, construction of camps in order to ensure their presence in the maintenance
of the roads after rehabilitation and reconstruction.
A large part of the roads that will be intervened are pitted and the work that has now begun will consist of widening by another seven meters, construction of a new stabilized base, aqueducts and bridges where necessary. According to Govahica, it will be executed in two years starting next March and the contractors will have to do biennial maintenance after the rehabilitation.
According to Jorge Govahica, there are two other road rehabilitation projects, namely the Quelimane/Nicoadala/Namacurra section, with 70 kilometers and routine road maintenance. For the Quelimane/Namacurra road, the source said that the engineering project is being finalized since the contractor will design and execute the work. the work.
Last year began the process of releasing the partial protection zones
and compensation to families for the improvements covered by the project’s route.
The Quelimane/Namacurra works consisted of widening the width of the section to three meters and it will be two lanes.
Meanwhile, the authorities in the sector plan to carry out routine maintenance of
four thousand kilometers of roads this year. The delegate of ANE says that the province
has not yet received the budget for this purpose and indicated that last year Zambézia received 240 million meticais.
Most of the road network in the province needs periodical maintenance in order to
provide better road safety.
To build a road that resists adverse phenomena such as erosion, rains and other bad weather each kilometer consumes at least 300 thousand meticais.
Zambézia province has a road network of 5,100 kilometers, of which
