“Government Should Create Minimum Resilience Standards in Housing Construction” – UN Habitat

The United Nations Housing Organisation (UN-Habitat) has proposed to the Mozambican Government the creation of minimum resilience standards in housing construction. In turn, the Mozambican Architects Association says that it is necessary to train the population in construction techniques.

According to “O País”, cyclones, increasingly frequent, always leave a trail of destruction in communities, as well as multiplying the reflections on the resilience of infrastructures.

Speaking in Maputo, during an event aimed essentially at seeking partnerships between Italian and Mozambican architects, on sustainability and resilience in construction, Anselmo Cani, representative of the Order of Architects of Mozambique proposed that there should be production of resources and creation of small industries that can produce basic materials.

“Encouraging building materials to be accessible to the population is good, but it’s not just a matter of lowering the price of building materials.

The UN-Habitat said that the task is not only the government’s, but also the intervention of all sectors of society in order to have more resilient housing. Since January, Mozambique has been hit by five tropical storms, namely Ana, Bastirai, Cliff, Dumako and Gombe, which caused the destruction of important infrastructures in the country.
